ENDA TV will rebroadcast, on Wednesday 10, Thursday 11 and Friday 12 February 2021, the « Symposium in tribute to Professor Samir Amin » organised last year on the same dates, at the Cheikh Anta Diop 2 University (Ucad 2) in Dakar. Born in 1931 in Cairo (Egypt), Samir Amin died on 12 August 2018 in Paris. A doctor in political economics by training, committed to thought and militant action, he took part in the anti-colonialist movements of the radical Marxist era, marked by the Bandung Conference (1955) and the birth of the Non-Aligned Movement, Samir Amin was of enormous influence on the African and global intelligentsia. After serving in Egypt, where he encountered anti-communist repression and ‘the bureaucratic-technocratic nature of national management’, he left Cairo to join the revolutionary experience of Modibo Keita in Mali, before turning to university teaching in Dakar and Paris (Vincennes – Paris VIII-Saint-Denis). In Senegal, he joined the African Institute for Development and Planning (Idep) and then participated in the foundation of institutions that are still vibrant, such as Enda Tiers-monde and the Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (Codesria). The intellectuals, researchers and students who attended the Dakar symposium (10-12 February 2020) and took part in the debates bear the imprint of the teachings and actions of Samir Amin, activist, researcher and teacher.
