In particular, I will intervene to highlight the lack of rigorous scientific work to date to justify the economic rationale for intra-African « free trade. Roughly speaking, [and apart from the statistical problems], the existing work defends the FTAA on the basis of the following assumptions: no unemployment/underemployment, customs revenue losses are automatically compensated and have no impact on aggregate demand, trade deficits are automatically absorbed (exchange rates are flexible – hello CFA franc!), foreign currency debt plays no role, etc. «
